Perfect for its intended market August 29, 2008 David Henderson Begg (London, UK) 55 out of 57 found this review helpful
QuickBooks SimpleStart was introduced to fill the gap in the market left when Intuit withdrew the Quicken home software in the UK. Many small businesses were using Quicken (which, by the way, had no VAT or invoice features) to manage their accounts.
SimpleStart is defintely simple... but that has always been one of the strengths of the QuickBooks range. Ease of use is essential for hard pressed entrepreneurs! Although a number of different types of businesses could make use of SimpleStart it is best used by sole traders offering a service.
SimpleStart has never made any big claims about VAT. It can only handle VAT on a cash basis (the UK standard is accrual) but then its target audience is not VAT registered businesses.
There were definitely a number of bugs in the 2008 QuickBooks line-up but this was a result of a massive effort over the past two years to bring the UK software up to the same level as that enjoyed in the US. These bugs have been addressed in the past year with various patches that are included on the most recent CDs and we are more than happy with the latest versions of the software.
Finally, bear in mind that accounting software is IMPORTANT and if you're not sure which product you need you should consult one of the many QuickBooks professionals out there on the web that will give you free advice on the pluses and minuses of all versions of the software.
One for the shortlist - well worth considering November 22, 2008 R. Hallett (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
SimpleStart is easy to use if this is what you are looking for `simplicity' then this is the package to buy. Ease of use is essential for the smaller concern one or two people who are looking for something straightforward, that does not require lots of time or complications.
SimpleStart is not aimed at the VAT registered business, if you are VAT registered then use caution perhaps before purchasing.
No particular problems were noted whilst using the software this seemed quick, easy and functional.
If this product should be on a short list of options, I am sure that no one would be displeased or regret the purchase of this software accountancy package.
Works OK on Windows 7 64bit November 18, 2009 Mr. A. Clark (Romsey, Hampshire United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have used QuickBooks Simple Start 2006 for about two and a half yeas now but it wouldn't work on my new PC. I was apprehensive about buying the 2008 version mainly because of the reviews. I am glad to say that I can put some myths to bed.
- You can import a previous Simple Start company into this version.
- It does work on Windows 7 and on 64bit OS.
The only down side is that it works out profit and loss on a payment basis only, where you used to have the option of Accrual or Payment. (unless I'm not using it right!)
New in this version is the facility to customise the invoices and sales receipts.
The software is very simple to use and I can appreciate that it would have severe limitations for some users. Here is a list of some of these limitations.
- Although you can have a list of items you sell, the program does not do stock control.
- No provision for wages.
- Almost all payments from your bank account need to be accounted as cheques.
- There does not seem to be a Petty Cash account.
- There does not appear to be a way of producing customisable reports.
- My accountant doesn't accept the reports directly, I have to provide additional information.
Overall, a very suitable program for a one man business like mine.
Please note that by going onto the Intuit site you can download a trial version of this program. I did in order to check its compatibility.
Easy as 123 October 23, 2008 T. Satchwell (A Tower in the Heart of London.......) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used quicken for my home accounts for years...and I was looking for something to help me with my self employment business.
I trialed the Microsoft Office Accounting Professional..but found it a little complex to set up without some accounting knowledge..so...Simple Start seemed like a good plan.
I currently use a number of spreadsheets for my accounts..and Quickstart is basically a number of spreadsheets/work sheets which you can access from the main menu...there are some nice repoting facilities which you can't get too easily from excel unless you are clever!!
Having said that...my problem really was needing to be able to input historical data...so it would be a really useful program.
I'd say it does what it says on the box....it's straight forward to set up
but get it before you've done three years of work and it takes too long to input!!!
SimpleStart is the model of simplicity October 16, 2008 Mr. P. J. Coombe (Southend) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
In terms of features, SimpleStart is a good, basic accounting system. All the key areas - invoicing, estimating and bank reconciliation - are well covered. You can create invoices speedily through a hyperlink on the homepage and can now email both estimates and invoices as PDF attachments. And, aside from the standard entries in SimpleStart's slimmed down list of 14 reports, which now includes a trial balance and a better audit trail, there are useful gems, including a "Total Sales by customer" report that shows an overview of active customers and their balances. Handily, you can drill down on its figures to the invoices.
It's also good to see the use of plain English in reports: rather than the traditional aged debtor analysis, SimpleStart's equivalent is the clearer "Invoices that haven't been paid". Unfortunately, though, the reports are hamstrung. While you can now extensively customise the layout of reports and forms, I couldn't find a way to export them to Word and Excel for further analysis.
Overall a nice basic system for basic book keeping...if this is you, then its spot on
